Berry Banana & Greens Smoothie

IMG_7146.JPG

There’s no matter way to wake up than a smoothie (after coffee, of course). It makes me feel refreshed, my body feels ready to go, and all in all, it's the best thing your body can use in the mornings. It'll thank you for it, I promise.

I have a few different smoothies I switch between. I’m simple. I don’t try to make the most extravagant smoothie and I often use whatever we have in our fridge. My favorite is so simple to throw together, you'll start adding it to your morning routine.

Ingredients

  • 1/4-1/2 cup of frozen berries
  • 1 ripe banana
  • Bunch of kale (add a little spinach if you want too)
  • Flax seed (also shredded coconut, hemp seed, and chia seed when I have it)
  • Almond Milk, coconut water, or water filled just above the fruit and veggies

Add them all to your blender, blend, and drink up! It's so simple and it's such a good base recipe you can try different variations. Frozen mango instead of frozen berries? Spinach instead of kale? Coconut milk instead of almond milk? Get creative with it.

Tell me your favorite smoothie in the comments so I can try it!

A woman of curious nature, my name is Shayna. I am wild & reserved. Humbled & proud. Quiet & clamorous. Strange & familiar. I live in the trees of New England typing away as lifestyle blogger. You can always find me with a coffee cup in one hand and a book in the other.

Blogging since 2005, I’ve had an innumerable amount of blogs on a vast number of platforms. Finally, I’ve found one to call home: The Lovely Cicada. This blog is a piece of myself I extend to you.

My Skin Care Routine

Finding a good skin care routine is therapeutic. It's so nice to be able to cleanse my face and remove all the built up grime at the end of a long day and wash the entire day away. It reminds me of a renewal process and gives me a fresh start. As the seasons change, we also have to make a couple adjusts to suit the weather. Winter can be drying and this routine has helped keep me radiant, balanced, and moisturized. These are my personal choices as of late that I'm loving. However, as much as I don't want to quit them, I always find changing out products every now and then to be extremely beneficial.

One of the most crucial things you need to do for your skin is: get to know it. What triggers your acne? Certain foods, drinks, etc? How much do you need to exfoliate without becoming irritated? How much water are you drinking? What products make you worse and what make you better? Asking these questions as you start your routine is extremely important and will help give you the radiance you're looking for!

Removing

At night, I remove my make-up using coconut oil & water. It takes my make-up off with such ease (coconut oil is magic.. I swear.) Sometimes I use the Burt's Bees make-up wipes when I just want to wipe and throw away.

Cleansing

After removing my make-up, I use Pacifica's Rose Kombucha face wash and it is AMAZING. Previously, I was using their Sea Foam Complete Face Wash and I fell in love with it. I was going to buy it again until I found this in the new section and had to try it. The great thing about these cleansers is they are vegan, SLS free, paraben free, and cruelty free and they are so gentle. For the most part, my face isn't acne prone and my skin has never had issues with their products.

Moisturizing

Once my face is washed, I use Pacifica's Dreamy Youth Day & Night Cream. It's moisturizing, has a beautiful scent, and it absorbs quickly. I usually use this one at night. When I found the Rose Kombucha face wash, I also came across their Rose Flower Hydro Mist and I'm obsessed. I use it every morning as a moisturizer and my skin feels and looks incredible. It's lightweight and moisturizing and I can't get enough of it. Sometimes I'll even use it at night and nix the Day & Night Cream.

Honorable mentions

Bentonite Clay. Above all else is the HOLY GRAIL of skincare. I'm absolutely in love with bentonite clay and it has so many uses. One way I use it is as a face mask, once a week. It leaves my skin feeling refreshed and if I have a tiny acne spot, it's close to gone the next day and the redness has reduced. It's completely natural and I tell everyone about it if they're looking for something to help their skin. I bought mine a year ago from Thrive Market and I still have over half left. I've even shared some with a friend! For $5, this is a perfect staple to your cabinets. Use my link and you'll receive 25% off your first order! Thrive Market is perfect for anyone interested in natural products and foods but doesn't have a grocery store nearby that carries them.

Sea Algae gel mask. Pacifica's Sea Algae Gel Mask is a super easy and light mask for a little extra cleansing. I do this every other week for a refresher!

Hair Clip or Bandana. You'll want to pull your hair out of your face so you don't miss any spots!

Water. I swear this is it. This is what really makes a difference. When I have busy days, I go on coffee binges and forget to drink water. My face alerts me every single time I do it, too, because I'll start to break out around my chin. Once I start adding a ton of water back into my diet, they recede and don't bother me again.

Diet. There are some foods that make people break out so it's super important for us to pay attention to what we're eating and if our skin is being affected by it.

And that's it! I hope this helps you out and if you have any questions or comments feel free to leave them in the comments.

Witchy Wednesday: Meditation and Its Benefits Towards Your Craft

If we are not in tune with ourselves, our energy and our spells will be all over the place. The energy we put into the universe will be unbalanced and so will the energy we receive. Meditation brings us into ourselves and helps us to manifest our lives. Manifestation gives us the power to positively alter our reality by visualizing the change. Manifestation is the root of magick, of change, and of self growth and the way to achieve this is through meditation.

The first step is understanding that meditation isn't easy and requires practice. Too many blogs and articles give the appearance of things being "easy" and quick fixes yet they are toying with you. The best things in life almost ways require time, patience, effort, will, and hard work. From motherhood, to relationships, to friendships, to careers, to collections, to creations, everything requires those key ingredients. Do not allow yourself to be fooled into thinking things are easy because you will wind up giving up and feeling frustrated.

The second step is finding a meditation practice that works for you. The classic meditation of candles lit, complete silence, and reciting mantras is incredible but it is not the only way to meditate and in life, one size does not often fit all. Try the classic meditation, practice it, but also indulge in finding other ways to meditate. Perhaps creating art is something that helps you release or perhaps dancing. Whatever takes focus away from your stressors and negativities of life can be used as a form of meditation. And remember you will not see immediate results so consistent practice is key.

Meditation Ideas

Shower Meditation

Every time you take a shower, find a sense of calm and peace as the water caresses your flesh and envelopes you. Imagine all the negative energy and stress that surrounds you being washed away. From your head to your toes, it's being carried away. All the emotions you've been bottling up — the anxiety, the stresses, the sadness, the lack of motivation, the guilt is all being cleared off of you and is sinking into the drain. This is your release.

Art Meditation

Creation is a wonderful meditation. All our overwhelming emotion can be relieved by making art. We need to let ourselves go and open ourselves to our psyche and soul. Feel the paint gliding over paper with your brush. Feel the clay smooth against your fingers. Art is self connection and teaches us, with practice, to dive within us and break free from the outside world. Visualize your negative energy being released onto your canvas and transformed into something outside yourself, into something better.

Morning Journals

Imagine pulling them out. Like in Harry Potter and the pensieve, they brought the wand up to their temple, pulled out a memory, and dropped it into a basin. Do the same with your thoughts. Let them flow through you, to your pen, to paper and write it all out. Don't worry about anyone seeing it. Just let it all out and don't stop for a few pages. Not only does this allow a release, but it also gives us honesty about ourselves. It teaches us about our worries and our fears. Applied with meditation and with practice, it keeps us lighter and balanced.

Guided Meditation

Common meditation of sitting with legs crossed, palms open, eyes closed can not be beat as far as meditation goes. With practice, it is calming, soothing, freeing. Yet it is not easy. It requires practice and patience and a little frustration. It is absolutely okay if our mind drifts because that is our soul talking to us - letting us know where we need to heal and where we need to accept. However, for beginners, a warm welcome into meditation by guides is a useful tool. There are tons on the internet and I recommend searching for the right one that calls to you. One of my favorites is TheHonestGuys.
